The tallow market in Slovenia experienced significant volume fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. A sharp expansion occurred in 2019, with market volume surging by 47% to 5 282 tonnes. This peak was primarily driven by an extraordinary increase in imports, which rose from 67 tonnes to 1 684 tonnes, overwhelming a slight dip in domestic production and a fall in exports.

Following the 2019 peak, the market volume stabilized in 2020 before entering a phase of gradual contraction. By 2023, the market size had declined to 4 311 tonnes, marking an 18% decrease from the high point. This downward trend was sustained by a continued reduction in import volumes, which fell to 986 tonnes by 2023, coupled with a steady decline in domestic production from 4 056 tonnes to 3 500 tonnes over the period.

Slovenia's tallow production volume increased after two years of decline. In 2020, the country produced 4 228 tons of tallow, marking a 5.6% rise compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production decreased by 6.9%, with an average annual decline of 2.3%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 4 004 tons, while the largest year-on-year drop occurred in 2018 at 10.6%.

Slovenia's tallow production value increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, tallow output was valued at 2 807 thousand US dollars, showing a robust 15.0% advance compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production value grew by 37.3%, with an average annual growth rate of 11.1%.

Slovenia's tallow exports declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country exported 329 tons of tallow, representing a substantial 18.9% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports fell by 24.4%, with an average annual decline of 8.9%. The highest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 525 tons, while the largest year-on-year drop occurred in 2019 at 22.8%. The most significant increase happened in 2018 with a 20.8% rise.

From 2017 to 2020, North Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina served as the primary markets for Slovenia's tallow exports, together accounting for 81.2% of total export volume. Other destinations maintained comparatively modest shares during this period.
