In 2018, India's sweet potato market volume peaked at 1.5 million tonnes. Subsequent years saw a decline, with the market contracting to 1.16 million tonnes in 2019, primarily due to a reduction in cultivation area driven by the lack of processing industries, which limited farmer incentives. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 further stabilized volumes around 1.14-1.12 million tonnes through 2021, as supply chain disruptions and logistics challenges affected distribution.

The market recovered from 2022, reaching 1.18 million tonnes that year and growing to 1.29 million tonnes in 2023. This rebound was fueled by the expansion of processing facilities, especially for flakes in Punjab and Haryana, alongside a significant 30% plant expansion by MS International in Gujarat to meet rising demand. Major player ITC Limited also launched a new range of baked potato snacks for health-conscious consumers, while record potato production and continued investments in freezing technologies supported the processed sweet potato segment.

Sweet potato production in India fell for the second year in a row. In 2020, India produced 1 141 thousand tonnes of sweet potatoes, down 1.3% year-on-year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production dropped by 21.8%, with a compound annual growth rate of -7.9%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 1 500 thousand tonnes. The sharpest decline occurred in 2019, with a 22.9% decrease, while the largest increase was in 2018, at 2.7%.

Exports sweet potatoe from India

Sweet potato exports from India rose for the third consecutive year. In 2020, India exported 1 035 tonnes of sweet potatoes, marking a 40.9% increase compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports surged by 178.9%, translating to an annualized growth rate of 40.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, India's sweet potato exports in volume were primarily directed to Nepal and the United Arab Emirates, which together accounted for 82.8% of total shipments, with other destinations playing a minor role.

The data shows irregular fluctuations, pointing to a volatile market environment. Exports reached their lowest point in 2018 and peaked in 2020, with a 2.5-fold difference between these years. In 2020, sweet potato shipments from India abroad amounted to 346.4 thousand US dollars, up 115.0% from the previous year. The minimum value was recorded in 2018 at 138.4 thousand US dollars, with the largest decline that year at 19.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Nepal (30.7% of export value), the United Arab Emirates (29.9% of export value), and Maldives (15.6% of export value) formed the primary group of destinations for India's sweet potato exports in value terms, collectively representing 76.2% of total flows.
