The ASEAN sweet potato market volume contracted from 3 948 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 3 239 thousand tonnes in 2023, with annual fluctuations. Production followed a similar declining trend overall, falling from 3 978 thousand tonnes to 3 252 thousand tonnes over the period, though it saw a temporary recovery in 2022.

The market rebound in 2022, when production increased to 3 819 thousand tonnes and market volume rose to 3 819 thousand tonnes, was supported by improved export access. In November 2022, Vietnam signed a decree permitting fresh sweet potato exports to China, and Chinese customs approved 13 Vietnamese packing facilities and 70 cultivation areas, establishing a stable export channel that bolstered regional production and market volume for that year.

ASEAN's sweet potato production rebounded after a two-year decline. In 2019, production hit its lowest point at 3 753 thousand tonnes, but then increased by 1.3% in 2020 to reach 3 802 thousand tonnes. Over the entire period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 6.3%, which translates to an average annual decrease of 2.1%. The sharpest drop occurred in 2019, when production declined by 5.7%.

Exports sweet potatoe from ASEAN

The data shows significant fluctuations, pointing to a highly volatile market. In 2018, exports reached their minimum at 51.2 thousand tonnes, but then surged to a peak of 144.1 thousand tonnes in 2019—a 2.8-fold increase. However, in 2020, exports fell sharply to 123.3 thousand tonnes, marking a 14.5% decline compared to the previous year. The largest decrease was recorded in 2018 at 38.9%, while the biggest jump occurred in 2019 with a staggering 181.4% increase.

From 2017 to 2020, China, Japan, and Hong Kong consistently dominated ASEAN's sweet potato exports in volume, collectively accounting for 65.9% of the total trade flows.

Exports in value, M $ US

ASEAN's sweet potato exports in value terms recovered after a two-year downturn. In 2019, exports hit their lowest point at 73.9 million US dollars, but then rose by 20.0% in 2020 to reach 88.8 million US dollars. Over the 2017–2020 period, exports decreased by 16.7%, averaging an annual decline of 5.9%. The most significant drop was in 2018, when exports fell by 22.3%.

Between 2017 and 2020, China, Japan, and Hong Kong were the main destinations for ASEAN's sweet potato exports in value terms. China accounted for 38.0% of exports, Japan for 17.5%, and Hong Kong for 1.9%, together making up 57.5% of the total export value.

Imports sweet potatoe to ASEAN

ASEAN's sweet potato imports in volume have been growing for three consecutive years. In 2020, imports reached 38.9 thousand tonnes, up by 72.4% compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, imports surged by 344.9%, which corresponds to an average annual growth rate of 64.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Japan, China, and Australia were the key sources for ASEAN's sweet potato imports in volume. Japan contributed 1.5% of imports, China 1.3%, and Australia 0.7%, together representing 3.6% of the total import flows.

ASEAN's sweet potato imports in value terms have increased for the third year in a row. In 2020, imports amounted to 58.3 million US dollars, showing an 11.8% rise compared to the previous year. Over the 2017–2020 period, imports grew by 82.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 22.3%.

Between 2017 and 2020, ASEAN's sweet potato imports in value terms were distributed across numerous countries. Japan accounted for 14.0% of imports, Australia for 2.7%, and China for 2.4%, but together these three only made up 19.1% of the total import value.
