In 2024, the market was affected by global sunflower oil supply shortages resulting from the war in Ukraine, which reduced worldwide availability by an estimated 50% and introduced significant price volatility.

In 2020, the country produced 4 514 tonnes, marking a significant drop of 43.6% compared to 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production fell by 35.5%, with an average annual decline of 13.6%. The peak was reached in 2018 at 8 600 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 22.9% that year.

Switzerland's exports of sunflower, safflower, or cottonseed oil and fractions have increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 308 tonnes, a substantial rise of 63.5% from the previous year. However, over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 9.2%, translating to an average annual decline of 3.2%. The lowest point was in 2018 at 130 tonnes, which also experienced the sharpest drop of 61.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, Australia, and the United Kingdom were the top destinations for Switzerland's exports in kind. Germany accounted for 53.1% of exports, Australia for 16.9%, and the United Kingdom for 5.2%. Together, these three countries made up 75.3% of total export flows.

After two years of decline, Switzerland's exports of sunflower, safflower, or cottonseed oil and fractions in value terms have rebounded. In 2020, export value reached 466 thousand US dollars, showing a solid increase of 13.2% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 span, however, exports decreased by 51.7%, with an average annual decline of 21.5%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 411 thousand US dollars, while the largest drop occurred in 2018 at 56.4%.
