Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for sunflower, safflower, or cottonseed oil and fractions in Southern Europe increased from 2 128 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 2 206 thousand tonnes in 2019, then contracted to 1 997 thousand tonnes in 2020. Global sunflower oil supply remained heavily dependent on Ukraine and Russia, influencing worldwide availability and pricing.

After stabilizing near 1 996 thousand tonnes in 2021, the market grew to 2 193 thousand tonnes in 2022 and reached 2 324 thousand tonnes in 2023. The Russia-Ukraine war disrupted supply chains, creating uncertainty that prompted higher import volumes and drove market expansion as European buyers sought to secure stocks. Continued global supply tension maintained this upward pressure through 2023.

In 2024, supply concerns linked to the war led to rationing of sunflower oil sales in supermarkets across Spain and Portugal. European prices corrected downward by 11% in December after historic highs, aided by increased shipments from Russia and Ukraine and competition from other vegetable oils, while the industry adopted more efficient, sustainable extraction and refining technologies.
