Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for sunflower, safflower or cottonseed oil in Malawi rose from 10 008 t in 2018 to a high of 12 368 t in 2020. This upward trajectory was interrupted in 2021 when the market contracted to 9 583 t.

After the drop, market volume stabilized between 9 000 t and 9 500 t from 2021 through 2023. During 2023, increased regional supply from South Africa, a major exporter of refined sunflower or safflower oil to neighboring countries, contributed to a rise in Malawi's imports, helping lift the market volume to 9 462 t that year.

Domestic production followed a comparable path, peaking in 2020 before declining, while imports fell substantially after 2020 before partially recovering in 2023 alongside the regional trade activity.
