The Norwegian sulphuric acid and oleum market saw significant fluctuations between 2018 and 2020. Market volume reached 469.6 thousand tonnes in 2018, supported by expectations of rising oil and gas production on the Norwegian shelf. The following year, volume dropped to 319.5 thousand tonnes, coinciding with revised lower production forecasts for the petroleum sector in 2019. A recovery began in 2020, with market volume rising to 349.3 thousand tonnes as oil production commenced a period of annual increases, driven by new field developments.

From 2021 onwards, import volumes of sulphuric acid and oleum varied, but the value of imports rose steadily, reaching 15.3 million dollars by 2025. This trend occurred alongside sustained investment and activity in Norway's oil and gas sector, which is a key consumer. Production from new fields, such as Johan Castberg coming online at the end of 2024, and a licensing round awarding 13 permits in 2025 underpinned demand. Furthermore, the launch of large-scale carbon capture and storage projects, including the world's first full-scale CO2 injection by Northern Lights in 2025, introduced new industrial applications for sulphuric acid in emission treatment processes.
