Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the market volume for sulphuric acid and oleum in Denmark grew from 29 727 tons to 37 055 tons, accompanied by a rise in domestic production. This expansion was initially supported by the opening of the Ravn oil field in 2017, which bolstered oil-related chemical output. At the same time, the gradual shutdown and renovation of the Tyra field platforms from late 2018 onward began to affect oil production, setting the stage for later market adjustments.

Imports surged to 41 034 tons in 2021 before dropping to 32 323 tons in 2022. The decline coincided with Denmark's green tax reform for industry, which introduced CO2 charges for refineries, and with ongoing major renovation projects in the North Sea that constrained oil sector activity. Both factors reduced demand for sulphuric acid and oleum, which are closely tied to oil processing. New labelling requirements for chemical mixtures, effective from January 2022, added further regulatory pressure.

Imports continued to fall in 2023, reaching 29 453 tons, as amendments to the Chemicals Act came into force, tightening rules on the sale and use of industrial chemicals. By 2024 and 2025, imports stabilized and showed a slight recovery, rising to 30 509 tons and 32 767 tons respectively, suggesting the market was adapting to the new regulatory environment.
