Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, sugar cane production in Polynesia increased modestly from 3 450 tons to 3 505 tons. This growth was supported by government financial aid for agricultural equipment and agro-processing, as well as subsidized maritime freight for transporting cane between islands. The creation of a syndicate for the Polynesian agricultural rum Geographical Indication in 2019 began structuring local distilleries, creating more organized demand for cane.

Between 2021 and 2023, production rose further to 3 565 tons. Research into endemic Polynesian cane varieties, like O’Tahiti, aimed to improve cultivation and support the quality claims for the rum sector. The pursuit of a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) and multiple gold medals won by local rums at international competitions boosted the sector's prestige, encouraging continued plantation development and investment in modern distillery processes.
