Earlier Report Observations

The Omani sugar cane market began the period with the inauguration of a major integrated sugar refinery at Sohar Port in 2018, a strategic OMR 150 million investment to boost food security. While domestic cultivation in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate kept production steady at 1 650 t, the sector faced persistent water scarcity challenges. Market volume subsequently contracted, falling to 1 480 t by 2020.

A recovery commenced in 2021 when the Sugar and Integrated Industries Company, in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, rolled out financial incentives for farmers adopting drip irrigation and ensured timely payments at the start of the supply season. These measures helped lift production to 1 610 t and market volume to 1 586 t. The growth trend continued, with production reaching 1 714 t and the market expanding to 1 834 t by 2023, supported by sustained local farming efforts.
