Sugar cane production in Mali expanded from 584.2 thousand tons in 2018 to 665 thousand tons by 2021. This growth was driven by the country's vast arable land resources and favorable climatic conditions, supported by state subsidies for agricultural inputs and guaranteed producer prices that incentivized cultivation. The launch of the Smallholder Horticulture Empowerment and Promotion (SHEP) project in 2021 further contributed by promoting market-oriented farming and providing mechanization support to growers.

Market volume remained stable at around 665 thousand tons in 2022 despite global surges in agricultural input prices and supply chain disruptions following the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which constrained input availability in Mali due to regional trade embargoes. However, production declined to 605 thousand tons in 2023, primarily due to the impact of new crop pests like Amrasca biguttula that affected yields, compounded by the lingering effects of high input costs and supply challenges.

Sugar cane production in Mali has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, Mali produced 660 000 tonnes of sugar cane, representing a slight rise of 1.5% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 24.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of 7.5%.
