Earlier Report Observations

Tunisian sugar beet production remained relatively stable between 2018 and 2023, with annual volumes fluctuating within a narrow range of 85,000 to 88,000 tons. A decline to 85,365 tons in 2020 coincided with reported financial difficulties in the domestic sugar industry, which relies heavily on imports and faced operational challenges. This was partially offset by state support for the sector, including ministerial visits to key growing regions and plans for integrated production systems announced that same year, which contributed to a recovery to 86,905 tons in 2021.

Production stabilized around 86,000 tons in 2022 and 2023, as the government reinforced its commitment to the sector. In 2023, authorities pledged to expand the area dedicated to sugar beet cultivation to 4,500 hectares and improve irrigation water management. These efforts were followed by further action in 2024, including the revival of the Ben Bachir sugar factory in Jendouba and the distribution of production contracts to farmers, highlighting ongoing initiatives to strengthen local sugar production.
