Earlier Report Observations
Production of primary sugar crops in Tunisia began the period at 88 000 tons in 2018. High output from the grain sector and growth in date exports created competition for agricultural land and resources, which affected the dynamics for sugar crops. This competition persisted into 2019, contributing to a slight decrease in production to 87 350 tons.
The most notable drop occurred in 2020, with output falling to 85 365 tons. A partial recovery to 86 905 tons followed in 2021, though the overall volume remained below the starting point.
In May 2022, Tunisia launched a national strategy to valorize local products, aiming to enhance quality and market access for agricultural goods, including sugar crops. Despite this supportive policy, production saw a minor dip to 86 540 tons that year. The market was further influenced in 2023 by a sharp 25% rebound in citrus fruit production, which increased competition for agricultural inputs and coincided with another small decline to 86 270 tons.
