Earlier Report Observations

Sugar beet production in Kyrgyzstan began the period at 773 thousand tons in 2018, a level supported by expanded cultivation areas and state policies aimed at replacing sugar imports. Output then entered a sustained decline, falling to 365.6 thousand tons by 2021. This contraction was directly linked to a reduction in the sown area for sugar beet, which decreased from 10.2 thousand hectares to approximately 9 thousand hectares.

The market reversed course from 2022, with production rising to 468.1 thousand tons. This recovery was fueled by a significant expansion of the sown area to 13.5 thousand hectares and a sharp 58% increase in purchase prices for beets, which incentivized farmers. Growth continued in 2023, with output reaching 621 thousand tons, driven by substantial yield improvements to an average of 614.6 centners per hectare and a growing number of farmers under contract with the country's major sugar processing plants.
