Earlier Report Observations

The sugar beet market in Eastern Europe expanded from 82 711 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 90 492 thousand tonnes in 2019, supported by steady demand for sugar and rising agricultural commodity prices, which incentivized production. Cultivation profitability improved despite increasing costs, further encouraging output. This growth was interrupted in 2020 when unfavorable weather conditions and a consequent drop in yields, alongside a reduction in sown areas to 926 thousand hectares, led to a significant market contraction to 68 778 thousand tonnes.

Market volume recovered to 78 972 thousand tonnes in 2021, driven by an expansion in sown area and gross harvest. Growth continued in 2022 as yield per hectare rose by 16% and harvested area increased slightly, reaching 83 694 thousand tonnes despite geopolitical tensions and higher production costs. By 2023, further expansion of sown areas to 1.06 million hectares and increased yield, facilitated by the modernization of processing capacities and higher import quotas for seeds, pushed market volume to a new high of 91 596 thousand tonnes.
