Copra production in Africa experienced a substantial decline from 175 thousand tons in 2018 to 116 thousand tons in 2023. The most pronounced decrease occurred in 2019, after which production continued to trend downward, with a modest recovery only in the final year.

The overall market volume for copra in Africa followed a similar contraction, shrinking by approximately 34% over the six-year period. This reduction in domestic output was not offset by significant changes in trade flows, as imports and exports remained relatively small in scale.

Africa's copra production declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the continent produced 130.0 K t of copra, marking a 6.1% drop from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production fell by 24%, with an annualized decline rate of 8.7%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 175.4 K t. The largest year-on-year decrease occurred in 2019 at 21.0%, while the biggest increase was seen in 2018 at 2.5%.

Exports copra from Africa

Exports in kind, t

The market showed an unstable trend throughout the period. Exports reached their lowest point in 2018 at 780 t and peaked in 2019 at 3 698 t, creating a 4.7-fold gap between these years. In 2020, Africa's foreign copra supplies amounted to 1 811 t, representing a sharp decline of 51.0% compared to 2019. The largest decrease was recorded in 2018 at 67.2%, while the most significant increase occurred in 2019 at 374.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan remained the top destinations for Africa's copra exports in kind. Saudi Arabia accounted for 37.0% of exports, followed by the United Arab Emirates at 19.2% and Jordan at 10.9%. Together, these three countries represented 67.1% of total export flows.

Exports in value, K $ US

In 2020, Africa exported 1 686 K $ US worth of copra, down by 52.9% from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 44.4%, equating to an annualized decline rate of 17.8%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 3 582 K $ US, which also saw the largest increase at 49.2%.

Throughout the 2017-2020 period, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan formed the key group of partners for Africa's copra exports in value terms. Saudi Arabia accounted for 41.4% of exports, the United Arab Emirates for 17.0%, and Jordan for 11.2%. Collectively, these three countries represented 69.6% of total export flows.

The market displayed volatility over the observed period. Import volumes varied significantly, with a 6.6-fold difference between the high in 2019 at 97 t and the low in 2020 at 15 t. In 2020, Africa's imported copra volumes were recorded at 15 t, down by 84.8% from the previous year. The largest increase was recorded in 2018 at 259.4%.
