Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for chemically pure sucrose in solid form in Saint Lucia showed considerable variation from 2018 to 2023. After a rise to 5 851 tonnes in 2019, consumption declined over the next two years before jumping to a high of 6 231 tonnes in 2022. A sharp reversal followed in 2023, with the market contracting to 3 265 tonnes.

Movement in total supply was primarily driven by import volatility. Local production gradually decreased from 3 291 tonnes to 2 466 tonnes across the period, making imports the key determinant of market size. Substantial import increases in 2019 and 2022 lifted overall volume, while a steep drop in imports during 3 precipitated the market's severe contraction in that year.

As a result, the market finished the period well below its 2022 peak, with the 2023 consumption level falling even lower than the 5 130 tonnes recorded at the start in 2018.
