The starch market in Western Asia expanded considerably between 2018 and 2022, with its volume rising from 484.0 thousand tonnes to a peak of 632.8 thousand tonnes. Growth was particularly strong in 2019 and 2020, with increases of 15% and 13% respectively, before a modest 5% contraction in 2021 and a recovery the following year.

Market volume then fell by 13% in 2023 to 548.4 thousand tonnes. This decline occurred alongside a plateau in domestic production after 2021 and concurrent changes in trade, with lower imports and higher exports reducing net supply available within the region.

Western Asia's starch production has grown for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 582.8 thousand tons of starches, marking a 5.5% increase from 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 37%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 11.1%.

Western Asia's starch production has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 290.2 million US dollars, showing a significant rise of 20.5% compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production grew by 80.5%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 21.8%.

Exports starches from Western Asia

After two years of growth, Western Asia's starch exports declined in volume. In 2020, exports totaled 170.9 thousand tons, down 14.9% from the prior year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 11.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 3.8%. The peak was reached in 2019 at 200.7 thousand tons, which also saw the largest annual increase of 24.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, the country structure of starch exports in volume was highly diversified. Nigeria accounted for 17.0% of exports, followed by Asia, not elsewhere specified at 8.9%, and Sudan at 3.9%. Together, these three markets made up only 29.9% of total flows, with the remaining 70.1% coming from a wide range of smaller markets.

Following two years of growth, Western Asia's starch exports in value terms declined. In 2020, exports amounted to 85.1 million US dollars, reflecting a 2.8% decrease year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports increased by 47.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 13.8%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 87.5 million US dollars, which also experienced the largest annual increase of 33.5%.

During 2017-2020, starch exports from Western Asia in value terms were spread across numerous markets. Nigeria contributed 15.8% of exports, Asia, not elsewhere specified accounted for 8.3%, and Sudan made up 3.8%. Combined, these three countries represented only 27.8% of total flows.

Imports starches to Western Asia

Western Asia's starch imports in volume have risen for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports reached 217.8 thousand tons, up 5.5% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports grew by 2.2%, with an average annual rate of 0.7%. The lowest point was in 2018 at 192.3 thousand tons, which saw the largest decline of 9.8%. The largest increase occurred in 2019, with a 7.4% rise.

From 2017 to 2020, starch imports in volume were distributed across a broad set of partner countries. India accounted for 12.3% of imports, Egypt for 11.4%, and Ukraine for 6.4%. Together, these three countries made up just 30.1% of total flows.

Western Asia's starch imports in value terms have increased for the third year in a row. In 2020, imports totaled 123.7 million US dollars, showing a modest rise of 2.2% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports grew by 12.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 4.0%.

In 2017-2020, the supplier portfolio for starch imports to Western Asia was broad. Egypt accounted for 9.7% of imports in value terms, India for 9.2%, and the Netherlands for 8.5%.
