Northern Europe's starch production has grown for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 1 393 thousand tons of starches, marking a 1.8% increase compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 34.4%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 10.3%.

Northern Europe's starch production value has also increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 579.4 million US dollars, showing a modest gain of 1.6% over the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, production value grew by 45.7%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 13.4%.

Exports starches from Northern Europe

Exports in kind, K t

After two years of growth, starch exports from Northern Europe declined. In 2020, the region exported 172.8 thousand tons of starches, which is 3.2% lower than in 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports increased by 12.5%, with an average annual growth rate of 4.0%. The highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 178.6 thousand tons, with the largest increase of 10.3% also occurring that year.

From 2017 to 2020, Poland, the Netherlands, and Germany were the largest buyers of starches from Northern Europe, accounting for 36.3%, 7.3%, and 5.6% of exports in kind, respectively. However, their combined share was 49.2% of total exports, indicating a diversified market structure.

Exports in value, M $ US

Following two years of gains, cross-border starch shipments from Northern Europe decreased. In 2020, export value amounted to 71.9 million US dollars, representing a measured decline of 3.3% year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 21.9%, equating to an annualized rate of 6.8%. The peak value was in 2019 at 74.4 million US dollars, while the largest increase of 13.1% was recorded in 2018.

During 2017–2020, starches from Northern Europe were supplied to a variety of markets. Even the top destinations—Poland, Germany, and the Netherlands—together accounted for only 37.6% of total export value, highlighting the region's broad market reach.

Imports starches to Northern Europe

Northern Europe imported 386.7 thousand tons of starches in 2020, up by 1.7% from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports increased by 6.7%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.2%. The highest import volume was in 2018 at 393.6 thousand tons. The largest decline of 3.4% occurred in 2019, while the largest increase of 8.6% was recorded in 2018.

Throughout 2017–2020, the Netherlands, France, and Germany remained the main sources for starch imports into Northern Europe, contributing 19.0%, 18.1%, and 17.8% of imports in kind, respectively. Together, they accounted for 54.9% of total import flows.

After two years of increase, starch imports into Northern Europe from abroad declined. In 2020, imports were valued at 270.3 million US dollars, showing a slight decrease of 0.8% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports rose by 13.4%, equating to an annualized rate of 4.3%. The maximum value was recorded in 2019 at 270.3 million US dollars, with the largest increase of 8.7% occurring in 2018.
