Earlier Report Observations

Swiss soybean production more than doubled from 3 740 t in 2018 to 6 949 t in 2023. This growth was primarily driven by the expansion of organic cultivation areas, supported by new soy varieties and anticipating the 2022 mandate that required Knospe-certified ruminants to be fed exclusively with Swiss Knospe feed, which includes soy. The rising demand for plant-based proteins also encouraged farmers to increase soybean output.

The total soybean market volume fluctuated over the period, declining to 15 751 t in 2020 before surging by 23% to 19 377 t in 2021. The sharp rise in 2021 coincided with increased global demand for plant proteins and a worldwide shortage of soybeans due to reduced South American harvests, which led to higher import volumes. After stabilizing near 19 200 t in 2022 under the influence of the new feeding regulations that boosted domestic production, the market contracted to 17 976 t in 2023 as imports fell further while domestic output continued to grow.

Industry initiatives such as the Soja Netzwerk Schweiz promoted sustainable, non-GMO soy sourcing throughout the period, with over 95% of soy in Switzerland being responsibly produced by 2023. Major retailers like Migros and Coop actively supported these efforts, fostering a shift toward European and domestic soy, which gradually reshaped the supply structure toward more local and organic production.
