This expansion occurred alongside volatile trade flows, as imports and exports responded to changing global conditions.

A key driver emerged in 2022, when severe droughts in Brazil and Argentina pushed international soybean prices to multi-year highs. This made Austrian non-GMO soy meal more competitive and stimulated local production. The following year, planted area reached about 87 146 hectares, and high yields in regions like Lower Austria further boosted output, even as total market volume stabilized.

Recent developments include the 2024 opening of ADM's new processing facility in Mainz, dedicated to domestic non-GMO soybeans, which provided additional capacity for local farmers. Simultaneously, the EU Deforestation Regulation, set to take effect in 2025, introduced new due diligence requirements for supply chains, affecting market preparations.
