From 2018 to 2020, the European soybean oil market remained stable at around 2.8-2.9 million tons. During 2018-2019, growing domestic soybean production, encouraged by European policies to diversify protein crops, helped maintain supply. The initial influence of biofuel regulations on demand also laid groundwork for future growth. In 2020, government initiatives supporting local non-GMO soybean production contributed to increased output, partially explaining the market volume rise to 2.87 million tons.

In 2021, the market surged by 8% to 3.11 million tons. This growth was primarily driven by a shift in consumer preferences towards healthier and more sustainable vegetable oils, which boosted demand for high-oleic soybean oil in Europe. The heightened domestic demand led to reduced exports and increased imports, expanding the total market size. However, in 2022, the volume declined to 2.99 million tons, likely reflecting a market correction following the previous spike.

By 2023, the market stabilized at 3.01 million tons. Continued growth in European non-GMO soybean production, particularly in France and Germany, supported supply. Simultaneously, the broader adoption of sustainability certifications and organic labels within the industry reinforced consumer confidence.

Europe's production of soybean oil and fractions has grown for the third year in a row. In 2020, Europe produced 4 513 thousand tonnes, marking a 1.8% increase from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 18.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 5.7%.

After two years of decline, Europe's production of soybean oil and fractions rebounded in value terms. In 2020, the output was valued at 3 909 million US dollars, showing a moderate gain of 9.5% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production increased by 2.7%, with a compound annual growth rate of 0.9%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 3 570 million US dollars, which saw the largest decline of 4.3%.
