Earlier Report Observations

After reaching 135.7 thousand tons in 2018, Zimbabwe's soybean oil market volume contracted sharply to 83.1 thousand tons in 2019, primarily due to a drop in imports from 121.3 to 74.8 thousand tons. The market rebounded strongly in 2020, with volume climbing to 133.8 thousand tons, nearly matching the pre-contraction level.

Growth continued from 2021 onward, with market volume expanding to 154.8 thousand tons in 2021 and further to 169.6 thousand tons in 2023. This upward trajectory was driven by rising import dependence, as soybean oil imports increased by $67 million in value terms in 2021 and kept growing. In 2023, a 32% decline in palm oil imports likely redirected demand toward soybean oil, reinforcing its market expansion amid overall rising food import expenditures.

For 2024, imports reached 181.2 thousand tons, indicating sustained high demand. The government announced reforms requiring processors to source 40% of raw materials locally from April 2025, aiming to reduce import dependence. Additionally, severe drought in 2024 curtailed domestic soybean oil production to 60 000 tons, necessitating increased imports from regional neighbors.
