The Portuguese soups and broths market began the period at 9 882 t in 2018 and grew to 11 496 t in 2019. This rise aligned with increasing consumer interest in healthy ingredients such as brewer's yeast, wheat germ, and whole grains, alongside a broader offer of convenient ready-to-eat products and concentrated broths.

Market volume dipped to 8 940 t in 2020, a year marked by the COVID-19 pandemic which reinforced demand for comforting, traditional soups. Recovery followed in 2021, reaching 9 386 t, supported by the launch of organic soups, recyclable packaging, and expanded online sales channels. A significant surge to 13 782 t occurred in 2022, driven by the entry of international players like Campbell Soup Company with new premium lines and the adoption of innovative, microwave-safe and BPA-free packaging.

Consumption continued to expand, reaching 15 107 t in 2023. Throughout the entire timeframe, traditional Portuguese soups such as caldo verde maintained their cultural and commercial appeal, underpinned by a stable base of domestic manufacturers and continuous product innovation.

Portugal's soups and broths production has grown for the third year in a row. In 2021, output reached 66 135 thousand US dollars, up 7.9% year-on-year. From 2018 to 2021, production surged by 67%, with an average annual growth rate of 18.6%.

Portugal's soups and broths production has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2021, the country produced 24 769 tonnes, a 1.0% rise compared to the previous year. Between 2018 and 2021, production grew by 51.4%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 14.8%.

After two years of growth, Portugal's soups and broths exports declined. In 2021, exports totaled 19 285 tonnes, down 1.9% from 2020. Over the 2018-2021 period, exports increased by 83%, with an average annual growth rate of 22.3%. The peak was in 2020 at 19 655 tonnes, which saw the largest increase of 63.5%.

From 2018 to 2021, Spain (20.3% of exports in kind), the United Kingdom (15.7%), and France (11.0%) were significant buyers of Portuguese soups and broths. However, their combined share was only 47.0% of total exports in kind, with the remaining 53.0% spread across many other trading partners.

Portugal's soups and broths exports in value terms have risen for the second consecutive year. In 2021, exports amounted to 54 916 thousand US dollars, a strong 10.2% increase from the previous year. Between 2018 and 2021, exports grew by 43.9%, equating to an annualized rate of 12.9%. The lowest value was in 2019 at 33 108 thousand US dollars, which experienced the largest decline of 13.2%, while 2020 saw the biggest increase of 50.5%.

The market for Portugal's soups and broths exports in value terms was diverse from 2018 to 2021. Spain (16.8% of exports in value terms), the United Kingdom (15.7%), and France (10.6%) together accounted for just 43.1% of total flows, with the remaining 56.9% distributed among numerous other countries.

Portugal's soups and broths imports have fallen for the second year in a row. In 2021, imports reached 3 901 tonnes, a 4.3% decrease from 2020. Between 2018 and 2021, imports dropped by 4%, equivalent to an annualized decline of 1.3%. The highest volume was in 2019 at 4 179 tonnes, which recorded the largest increase of 2.9%.

Throughout 2018-2021, Spain (64.9% of imports in kind), France (13.8%), and Germany (6.9%) were the key partners for Portugal's soups and broths imports, together making up 85.6% of total flows.
