Earlier Report Observations

The European sorghum market maintained stable volume around 1.6 million t in 2018 and 2019. This stability was underpinned by a significant rise in domestic production, which grew by 14% in 2018 and 30% in 2019, driven by expanded cultivation area and the adoption of higher-yielding hybrid seeds. The entry of new players, such as S&W Seed Company through joint ventures, supported the development of the seed sector.

Market volume then contracted, falling to 866 thousand t by 2022. During this period, sorghum continued to be promoted as a drought-resistant crop aligned with European climate adaptation strategies, and consumer demand for gluten-free and health-oriented sorghum products kept growing. Investments in genetic technologies and precision agriculture further strengthened the seed market infrastructure.

A recovery occurred in 2023, with market volume increasing by 10% to 955 thousand t. This growth was facilitated by further expansion of sorghum cultivation area, favorable climatic conditions for the crop, and the scaling of production capacities by seed companies. Rising consumer preference for healthy and sustainable food ingredients provided additional momentum.
