Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, Ecuador's sorghum production volume grew steadily from 13 855 metric tons to 14 513 metric tons, with the market relying almost entirely on domestic output as imports were negligible.

In 2021, production saw a slight adjustment to 14 202 metric tons. This period marked the crop's return to Ecuador after a 30-year absence, driven by insufficient domestic corn supplies to meet market demand and local research that successfully developed a new hybrid sorghum adapted to national conditions. Initial challenges in finding buyers due to the poultry industry's unfamiliarity with sorghum were overcome as the sector adopted the grain, creating a viable market with prices close to corn.

Production resumed its upward trajectory in 2022, reaching 14 318 metric tons, supported by the growing cultivation of the new adapted hybrids and increased acceptance from buyers in the poultry sector, which solidified a new market segment. Output continued to edge higher to 14 345 metric tons in 2023, completing a phase of gradual market expansion built on the crop's reintroduction.
