Earlier Report Observations

Sorghum production and market volume in the Americas increased significantly from 2020 to 2021. This growth was primarily driven by the introduction of new, more productive hybrid varieties. In February 2020, Bayer Crop Science launched a new forage sorghum hybrid with better drought tolerance and higher yield potential for arid regions. This was followed in May 2021 by Corteva Agriscience's release of an advanced seed range designed to improve forage quality and livestock productivity. These innovations, coupled with rising demand for sorghum as a climate-resilient crop for animal feed and the emerging bioenergy segment, supported the expansion. As a result, the physical market volume rose from 19.9 million t in 2020 to 21.5 million t in 2021, while its value jumped from 3.9 billion $ US to 5.1 billion $ US.

The market contracted sharply in 2022, with volume falling to 14.9 million t and value dropping to 4.2 billion $ US. This decline was largely caused by global supply chain disruptions and high volatility in grain prices, which affected regional market dynamics. A recovery followed in 2023, with market volume rebounding to 19.5 million t and value surging to 5.7 billion $ US. The comeback was supported by the continued adoption of hybrid and dual-purpose seeds, which offered better climate resilience. Furthermore, evolving regulatory and labeling requirements for bioenergy and animal feed applications influenced market access and commercialization, aiding the rebound.
