The paddy rice market in Ecuador experienced a drop in volume in 2019 to 882 тыс. т after the government reduced its minimum price support, which had previously stabilized producer incomes at a higher level in 2018. This policy shift directly affected farmer profitability and planting decisions.

From 2020 onward, the market recovered steadily, reaching 1 313 тыс. т by 2023. The adoption of improved rice varieties raised productivity, while financial support through credits and subsidies encouraged cultivation. Despite losing export markets like Colombia due to its self-sufficiency, domestic production grew, aided by concentration in high-yielding regions such as Guayas province.

Ecuador's paddy rice production rebounded in 2020 after two consecutive years of decline. The country produced 1,072 thousand tons of paddy rice in 2020, marking a significant 21.5% increase compared to 2019. Over the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 19.4%, which translates to an average annual decline of 6.9%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 882 thousand tons, with the steepest year-on-year drop occurring in 2018 at 18.6%.
