From 2018 to 2023, Afghanistan's silkworm cocoon production remained stable at 500 t annually. The domestic market volume, however, gradually declined from 500 t to 470 t as exports commenced in 2020 and expanded. This reduction in domestic availability was a direct result of focused efforts to develop the sericulture industry for external markets.

Government and international support programs launched in 2018, including training for hundreds of families in Balkh province and the distribution of cocoon stock, established a production base. Subsequent policies emphasized export potential and global demand, while the 2022 opening of a joint Afghanistan-Uzbekistan market in Surkhandarya created a dedicated corridor for cross-border trade, enabling the steady rise in exports.
