Silkworm cocoon production in Azerbaijan saw considerable volatility from 2018 to 2023. The initial output of 514 tons in 2018 was supported by active participation of women in traditional sericulture within the Sheki region, maintaining a foundation for the sector. Production then rose to a peak of 644 tons in 2019 before contracting sharply to 447 tons in 2020, a year which also marked the start of significant exports, reducing domestic market volume to 350 tons.

The market experienced a partial recovery in 2021, with production reaching 497 tons, but fell again to 341 tons in 2022. By 2023, output had modestly increased to 357 tons, with the domestic market volume correspondingly at 343 tons. Export volumes, which began in 2020, fluctuated considerably over this period, influencing the amount of product available domestically.

Looking ahead, the traditional sericulture activity in the Sheki region is noted as continuing, providing a thread of continuity for the sector amidst the broader production shifts observed in recent years.
