Earlier Report Observations

The market for shelled walnuts in Southern Asia expanded significantly from 2018 to 2023, with overall volume more than doubling from 21.2 thousand tons to 60.6 thousand tons. This growth was not linear, however, as the market experienced a substantial surge between 2020 and 2021, followed by a temporary contraction in 2022 before reaching a new peak in 2023.

Domestic production mirrored this trend, rising from 22.0 thousand tons to 59.4 thousand tons over the period, indicating that local output was the primary driver of market supply. Trade flows remained relatively modest in scale compared to production, though imports saw a notable increase to 3.6 thousand tons in 2023, while exports also grew, reaching 2.4 thousand tons the same year.
