The recovery from 2020 onwards was supported by a resilient import flow, which continued to grow despite the global COVID-19 pandemic, reflecting sustained consumer demand. This import growth, coupled with a substantial rise in domestic production from 2021, drove the market's rapid expansion over the following two years.

By 2023, the market reached a plateau at a high volume level. Throughout the period, the market operated without major legislative or policy shifts, relying on stable import channels and consistent consumption patterns.

After two years of growth, CIS shelled hazelnut production declined. In 2020, production reached 24 088 tonnes, marking an 8.4% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production increased by 5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.6%. The highest production level was recorded in 2019 at 26 292 tonnes, while the largest annual increase occurred in 2018 at 13.1%.

Exports shelled hazelnuts from CIS

In 2020, CIS exported 16 714 tonnes of shelled hazelnuts, a 15.2% decrease year-over-year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports declined by 10.6%, with a compound annual growth rate of -3.7%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 16 056 tonnes, while the highest was in 2019 at 19 702 tonnes. The largest annual increase occurred in 2019 at 22.7%.

In 2020, CIS exported 117.7 million US dollars worth of shelled hazelnuts, a gradual decline of 5.6% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, export value increased by 2.4%, equating to an annualized rate of 0.8%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 94.7 million US dollars, while the highest was in 2019 at 124.7 million US dollars.
