Between 2018 and 2020, the market volume for fresh plums and sloes in the CIS gradually declined from 539 thousand tonnes to 518 thousand tonnes, with a period of stabilization in 2019.

A significant expansion occurred in 2021, driving the market to 591 thousand tonnes. This surge was propelled by increased berry harvests in Russia, supported by the expansion of planted areas and the adoption of modern cultivation technologies. The following year, growth continued, albeit at a slower pace, reaching 604 thousand tonnes in 2022. State subsidies for agriculture and growing consumer demand for healthy foods helped sustain the market, even as geopolitical tensions and sanctions began affecting import and export logistics.

In 2023, the overall market volume contracted to 579 thousand tonnes despite domestic production climbing to a record 623 thousand tonnes. This shift was primarily due to a sharp rise in exports and a concurrent drop in imports, influenced by the ongoing geopolitical environment and increased domestic production capacity, which reduced reliance on foreign supplies.

Production of plums and sloes in the CIS declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 519.1 thousand tonnes, marking a 3.4% decrease from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 21.9%, with an average annual growth rate of 6.8%. The peak was reached in 2018 at 542.7 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest annual increase of 27.4%.

Exports plums and sloes from CIS

Following two years of decline, CIS exports of plums and sloes rebounded in 2020. Export volume reached 33 993 tonnes, showing a strong 12.8% increase compared to 2019. However, over the 2017-2020 period, exports fell by 18.6%, averaging a 6.6% annual decline. The lowest point was in 2019 at 30 136 tonnes, which also experienced the sharpest drop of 20.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, the export market for plums and sloes from the CIS was highly diversified. Key partners like Romania (9.9% of exports), Poland (4.0%), and Germany (1.2%) together accounted for just 15.2% of total flows, with the remaining 84.8% going to numerous other countries.

After two years of growth, the value of CIS plum and sloe exports decreased in 2020. Exports totaled 45 432 thousand US dollars, reflecting an 8.2% decline from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value increased by 16.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 5.3%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 49 499 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest annual increase of 25.0%.

Between 2017 and 2020, CIS plum and sloe exports in value terms were spread across many markets. Even the top destinations—Romania, Poland, and Germany—collectively represented only 14.4% of total export value.

In 2020, CIS imports of plums and sloes amounted to 33 189 tonnes, a significant 45.8% increase from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports grew by 16.7%, averaging 5.3% annually. The lowest volume was in 2019 at 22 766 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 34.2%. The peak was in 2018 at 34 574 tonnes.

The import structure for plums and sloes in the CIS from 2017 to 2020 remained fragmented. Major suppliers like Turkey (8.3% of imports), Chile (4.0%), and Serbia (3.0%) together made up only 15.3% of total flows, with no single country dominating.

In 2020, the value of plum and sloe imports to the CIS was 69 832 thousand US dollars, representing an 11.6% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, import value fell by 8.7%, with an average annual decline of 3.0%. The highest value was in 2019 at 79 013 thousand US dollars, which also recorded the largest annual increase of 3.7%.

Data from 2017 to 2020 show that imports of plums and sloes to the CIS in value terms were not concentrated among a few key suppliers. Turkey (12.2% of imports), Chile (8.5%), and South Africa (5.7%) together accounted for just 26.4% of total flows.
