Sheep and goat meat market in Venezuela

Between 2018 and 2020, production of sheep and goat meat in Venezuela first increased, supported by active stimulation of sheep farming in the states of Falcón, Carabobo, and Yaracuy. A general improvement in the economic environment further supported growth in 2019. However, in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic and associated mobility restrictions disrupted supply chains and the sale of fresh meat, leading to a contraction in output.

Production rebounded sharply in 2021, reaching a peak of nearly 22 000 t. This was followed by a significant drop in 2022, driven by enduring economic headwinds including high inflation and reduced consumer purchasing power, which constrained overall meat consumption. In 2023, output stabilized and showed a modest recovery to 19 638 t, reflecting a market adjusting to continued macroeconomic pressures without major new investments or policy shifts specific to the segment.

In 2020, Venezuela produced 19 186 tons of sheep and goat meat, marking a 5.5% decrease compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production fell by 10.6%, which translates to an average annual decline of 3.7%. The lowest production level was observed in 2018 at 18 952 tons. That same year saw the steepest drop of 11.7%, while 2019 experienced the most significant increase at 7.1%.
