Between 2018 and 2020, the market volume for sheep and goat meat in Czechia increased to 8 502 t in 2019 before falling sharply to 7 447 t in 2020. The market then continued to contract through 2021 and 2022, reaching a low of 6 060 t.

A recovery began in 2023, with the market volume rising to 6 298 t. This turnaround coincided with a growing consumer focus on meat quality and a shift in preferences toward healthier, sustainable products. By 2024, these trends were further supported by a 5% rise in household spending on chilled foods and an increased emphasis on sustainable agriculture.

Following two consecutive years of growth, Czechia's sheep and goat meat production experienced a decline. In 2020, the country produced 7 K t of sheep and goat meat, representing a controlled decrease of 8.7% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production fell by 7.6%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.6%. The peak production level was recorded in 2019 at 8 K t, while the strongest annual increase occurred in 2018 at 1.0%.

Exports sheep and goat meat from Czechia

After two years of contraction, Czechia's sheep and goat meat exports rebounded. In 2020, export volumes reached 275.4 t, marking a significant increase of 44.4% compared to the previous year. Throughout the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 25.1%, translating to a compound annual growth rate of 7.7%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 190.7 t, while the most substantial decline occurred in 2018 at 6.9%.

During the 2017-2020 period, Germany maintained its position as the primary export market for Czech sheep and goat meat, accounting for 74.2% of total export volumes. The remaining exports were distributed across numerous other international destinations.

Following two years of decline, Czechia's sheep and goat meat exports in value terms showed recovery. In 2020, export values reached 1 473 K $ US, representing an 18.6% increase compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, however, export values decreased by 2.6%, with a compound annual growth rate of 0.9%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 1 242 K $ US, which also saw the most significant annual decline at 17.1%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Germany and Slovakia together accounted for 85.2% of Czech sheep and goat meat exports in value terms. The remaining export value was distributed across various smaller markets.

After two years of expansion, Czechia's sheep and goat meat imports declined. In 2020, import volumes reached 652.6 t, representing a substantial decrease of 41.4% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 4.6%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.6%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 652.6 t, which also saw the strongest annual increase at 41.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, the leading sources of sheep and goat meat imports to Czechia were New Zealand (29.6% of import volumes), Germany (26.3%), and the Netherlands (17.0%). Together, these three countries accounted for 72.9% of total import flows.

Following two years of growth, Czechia's sheep and goat meat import values declined. In 2020, import values stood at 3 300 K $ US, down 42.9% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, import values decreased by 4%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 1.3%. The peak import value was recorded in 2019 at 5 776 K $ US, which also experienced the strongest annual increase at 39.5%.
