Domestic production was the primary component of market supply, increasing from 18.0 tonnes to 30.0 tonnes over the six-year period. At the same time, imports fell from 2.9 tonnes to 1.1 tonnes, shifting the supply structure toward locally produced meat.

The market recovered strongly after 2020, with growth of 18% in 2021 and a sharp 23% surge in 2022 to reach 30.5 tonnes. In 2023, growth moderated to 2%, with the market volume stabilizing at 31.1 tonnes.

After two years of growth, sheep and goat meat production in São Tomé and Príncipe experienced a decline. In 2020, the country produced 20 180 kg of sheep and goat meat, marking a significant contraction of 10.5% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production increased by 26.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 8.0%. The peak production level was reached in 2019 at 22 540 kg, which also saw the largest annual increase of 25.2%.
