This growth was consistent each year, with annual increments ranging between 32 and 60 thousand tons.

Domestic production was the main contributor to market supply, increasing from 1.45 million tons to 1.63 million tons over the period. Imports remained a minor factor, peaking at 42 thousand tons in 2023, while exports were negligible. The strongest annual market growth was recorded in 2022, with an addition of 60 thousand tons, before the pace moderated slightly in 2023.

Sheep and goat meat production in ECOWAS has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the region produced 1 521 thousand tonnes of sheep and goat meat, representing a 2.8% year-over-year growth. Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 9.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of 3.0%.

Exports sheep and goat meat from ECOWAS

In 2020, ECOWAS exported 40 tonnes of sheep and goat meat, marking a sharp 25.7% decline compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports fell by 35.6%, equivalent to an annualized decrease of 13.6%. The largest increase occurred in 2019, at 7.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, ECOWAS's sheep and goat meat exports were distributed across numerous markets. Congo (15.2% of exports), Austria (14.3%), and China (7.3%) together accounted for only 36.8% of total export volumes.

The market displayed an unstable trend throughout the period. Export volumes fluctuated 2.5 times from the 2017 high to the 2018 low. In 2020, ECOWAS exported 191 thousand US dollars worth of sheep and goat meat, a sharp 31.1% year-over-year decline. The minimum value was recorded in 2018 at 130 thousand US dollars. The largest decrease occurred in 2018 at 59.8%, while the largest increase was in 2019 at 112.9%.

Imports sheep and goat meat to ECOWAS

Sheep and goat meat imports into ECOWAS declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, import volume reached 2 484 tonnes, a 12.4% decrease compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 36%, with a compound annual decline rate of 13.8%.

The country composition of import volumes from 2017 to 2020 was dispersed. The United Kingdom (20.5% of imports), Belgium (13.9%), and Spain (12.6%) together formed just 47.0% of total flows, while the remaining 53.0% was distributed among a wide range of other sources.

After a two-year decline, sheep and goat meat imports into ECOWAS increased. In 2020, imports amounted to 5 647 thousand US dollars, showing minimal change from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 5.8%, with a compound annual decline rate of 2.0%. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 5 617 thousand US dollars. The largest decline occurred in 2018 at 4.5%.

Throughout 2017-2020, Spain (26.8% of import value), Australia (15.8%), and the United Kingdom (11.1%) remained the key partners for imports in value terms, together accounting for 53.7% of total flows.
