This policy shift supported local production capabilities and helped increase supply.

Market growth accelerated sharply in 2022, with volume jumping 18% to 1.6 million tons. This surge coincided with a one-third rise in international poultry prices compared to 2021 and widespread avian influenza outbreaks. These factors disrupted global and regional supply chains, affecting both local production and import patterns, and contributed to heightened market activity as the region adjusted to new cost and availability conditions.

In the following years, high volumes of imported frozen chicken and cuts continued, improving access for low-income households and altering consumption habits. Urban demand strengthened further, driven by demographic growth and urbanization, while exchange rate fluctuations and international trade policies influenced import costs. Consumer preference also shifted toward more affordable standard chicken meat due to economic constraints, shaping the market's evolution through 2024.

From 2017 to 2020, the United States (19.1% of imports in kind), Belgium (17.3% of imports in kind), and the Netherlands (13.9% of imports in kind) were the primary suppliers of chicken meat and offal to ECOWAS. Together, these three countries accounted for 50.3% of total imports in kind.
