Earlier Report Observations
The sheep and goat meat market in Cuba experienced strong growth from 2018 to 2021, with the market volume rising from 30 799 tonnes to 49 056 tonnes. This increase was supported by a state intervention in 2021 that established maximum procurement prices for cattle, which indirectly affected the entire meat sector by setting official purchase ceilings and linking sales to production plans.
Following the 2021 peak, the market contracted to 37 737 tonnes in 2022 and further to 36 383 tonnes in 2023. Throughout this period, import volumes remained minimal, never surpassing 160 tonnes annually.
For 2024, sheep and goat meat imports were reported at 108 tonnes. The Cuban government extended its price control regime for livestock through new regulations in March 2024, while reports indicated persistently high informal-market prices for beef and a dramatic increase in beef imports, highlighting ongoing supply-side pressures within the country's meat market.
