The sesame oil market in Middle Africa reached 61 084 tons in 2018, then grew to 65 652 tons in 2019 as artisanal production of local oils was promoted at agricultural events with cooperative support. However, in 2020, it fell to 53 637 tons due to high palm oil prices and supply constraints that affected the vegetable oil sector.

Market volume stabilized around 53 000 tons from 2021 to 2023. It edged down to 53 200 tons in 2021 despite the emergence of new local SMEs processing oilseeds and a government infrastructure strategy, highlighting import dependence. A further dip to 52 116 tons occurred in 2022 amid a suspension of local vegetable oil exports and the CEMAC region's import-substitution policy. By 2023, volume recovered to 53 975 tons following a ministerial meeting focused on alternatives to palm oil imports, indicating political support for local production.

In 2024, the sector saw the rise of new local enterprises in oil processing and increased use of mobile money for transactions, though reliance on imported raw materials and equipment continued.

Sesame oil and fractions production in Middle Africa saw a two-year improvement before declining. In 2019, production reached its peak at 65,642 tonnes, marking a 7.5% increase. However, by 2020, production dropped to 53,634 tonnes, representing a significant 18.3% decrease compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production fell by 9.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of 3.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, China was the leading source for imports of sesame oil and fractions into Middle Africa, accounting for 73.1% of total flows. The remaining share was distributed among several smaller markets.

Over 2017–2020, China, France, and Portugal were the top suppliers of sesame oil and fractions to Middle Africa in value terms. China led with 60.7% of imports, followed by France at 11.3% and Portugal at 9.2%. Together, these three countries accounted for 81.2% of total imports in value terms.
