Earlier Report Observations

The market for semi-bleached or bleached kraft pulp in the Americas experienced a gradual contraction in volume from 35 376 thousand tons in 2018 to 29 823 thousand tons in 2021, occurring within a context of industry-wide supply chain disruptions and tightening environmental regulations.

The decline continued, with volume reaching 28 549 thousand tons in 2022 and 27 089 thousand tons in 2023. The drop in 2023 was partly attributable to the closure of several pulp production facilities in North America, prompted by strained wood fiber supplies and aging infrastructure, which curtailed output and led to elevated inventory levels for bleached softwood kraft pulp.

Entering 2024, the market landscape began to shift with the launch of a new 500 000-ton-per-year eucalyptus kraft pulp mill in Chile, while strategic partnerships to secure fiber supply and sustained demand for sustainable packaging and hygiene products introduced new dynamics.
