Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2023, the market volume for paper and paperboard waste in the Americas fluctuated, starting at 62.3 million tons in 2018, dipping to a low of 58.0 million tons in 2020, and recovering to a peak of 63.1 million tons in 2022 before declining again to 58.2 million tons in 2023.

The market contraction in 2023 was influenced by ongoing fundamental stresses at mills, printing, and paperboard converting companies, which created uncertainty and disrupted operations. Concurrently, significant price increases for scrap paper and corrugated materials, doubling in some areas, impacted profitability and dampened market activity.

Entering 2024, the market landscape was shaped by the launch of new manufacturing capacities, particularly in containerboard and packaging mills, driven by e-commerce and sustainability demands. Stricter waste management laws and extended producer responsibility mandates also came into effect, incentivizing businesses to enhance their recycling practices.
