SAN and ABS copolymers market in Portugal

The Portuguese market for SAN and ABS copolymers contracted substantially between 2018 and 2023. In volume terms, market size fell from 29 thousand tons to 14.9 thousand tons, while its value declined from $69.4 million to $35.4 million over the same period.

This decline was driven by a sharp collapse in domestic production, which dropped from 5.2 thousand tons to just 262 tons by 2023. Although imports remained the dominant supply source, their volume also decreased from 25.5 thousand tons to 16.3 thousand tons, indicating a broad-based reduction in consumption.

Import values showed significant volatility, peaking at $60.3 million in 2021 before falling back. Exports reached their highest volume in 2021 at 3.3 thousand tons but later moderated. The overall trend points to a major downturn in the local market's scale and manufacturing activity for these polymers.

Portugal's exports of SAN and ABS copolymers increased for the third consecutive year. In 2021, exports reached 3 258 tonnes, up 17.1% compared to 2020. Over the period from 2018 to 2021, exports grew by 81.6%, with an average annual increase of 22.0%.

From 2018 to 2021, Spain, the Netherlands, and Brazil were the main destinations for Portugal's exports of SAN and ABS copolymers by volume. Spain accounted for 42.4% of exports, the Netherlands for 13.2%, and Brazil for 8.8%. Together, these three countries absorbed 64.4% of total export volumes.
