The Portuguese market for plastic reservoirs over 300 litres began a transformation in 2018 with the entry of new players offering large-capacity tanks made from recycled polypropylene, expanding product variety and easing installation. This was followed by regulatory shifts around 2020 that promoted sustainability and the use of recycled materials, which encouraged the production of eco-friendly tanks and contributed to a rise in domestic output to 555 tons that year.

Stricter European and national labeling and certification requirements for potable water storage tanks implemented in 2021 drove manufacturers to invest in UV-resistant innovations and longer product lifespans. These improvements supported a production increase to 615 tons and facilitated a sharp rise in exports. The trend continued in 2022 as policies explicitly encouraging recycled materials in manufacturing directly boosted local production, which reached 892 tons.

After the 2022 peak, production moderated to 802 tons in 2023 but recovered to 857 tons in 2024. Meanwhile, the total market volume in physical terms continued its upward trajectory, reaching 1 996 tons in 2023 and climbing to 2 187 tons in 2024, sustained by consistent import levels and ongoing demand for large plastic containers.

After two years of decline, production of plastic reservoirs, tanks, vats and similar containers with a capacity exceeding 300 liters in Portugal has rebounded. In 2021, the output value reached 8 096 thousand US dollars, representing a significant increase of 32.8% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2018 to 2021, production grew by 26.4%, with an average annual growth rate of 8.1%. The lowest value was recorded in 2020 at 6 095 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 3.0%.

Production of plastic reservoirs, tanks, vats and similar containers with a capacity over 300 liters in Portugal has increased for the second consecutive year. In 2021, Portugal produced 615.0 tons, marking a 10.9% rise from 2020. From 2018 to 2021, production expanded by 14.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.7%. The minimum production level was in 2019 at 515.3 tons, which also experienced the largest decline of 3.7%.

The market exhibited volatility during the observed period. Exports reached their lowest point in 2020 at 629 tons and peaked in 2021 at 1 736 tons, showing a 2.8-fold increase between these years. In 2021, exports surged by 176.1% compared to the previous year. The largest decline occurred in 2020, with a drop of 33.2%.

From 2018 to 2021, the main destinations for Portugal's exports of plastic reservoirs, tanks, vats and similar containers with a capacity over 300 liters were Spain, accounting for 64.4% of exports in kind, France with 14.6%, and Germany at 6.8%. The lowest import volume was in 2020 at 1 730 tons, while the largest decline occurred in 2019 at 10.5%.
