Earlier Report Observations

The Belarusian market for salted, brined, dried or smoked pork saw active development from domestic meat processors between 2018 and 2020. Major facilities like the Bobruisk, Kalinkovichi, and Minsk meat plants expanded their assortments to include smoked sausages and salted lard, supporting production volumes. After a slight dip in 2019, the market grew to 3 703 t in 2020, driven by increased demand for semi-finished and ready-to-eat meat products as consumer preferences shifted during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Regulatory changes then influenced the market. In 2021, the introduction of new legislation, including Council of Ministers Decree No. 700 of December 6, and tighter veterinary certificate requirements for imports and production, affected operations and contributed to a decline in market volume to 3 381 t. This trend continued in 2022 when a ban on the import of certain meat by-products and salted meat, effective from January 1, further reduced available supply, pushing the market down to 2 973 t. During this period, new product segments emerged, catering to consumer interest in natural and traditional foods.

In 2023, the market recovered to 3 130 t. This rebound was partly due to increased demand for pork products influenced by a shortage of poultry meat in Russia, which affected regional demand patterns. Additionally, the high share of domestic production, covering almost 100% of retail sales, provided supply stability despite limited availability of some cured and smoked items.
