Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for salted, brined, dried or smoked pork in ASEAN fluctuated between 7,306 t in 2018 and 7,671 t in 2023, with a peak of 7,890 t in 2022. Domestic production showed similar volatility, falling to 4,738 t in 2019 before partially recovering in later years. Regional exports dropped sharply after 2018, declining from 688 t to 85 t by 2023.

Industry reports highlight that African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreaks, which began affecting the region in 2019, significantly disrupted swine production in key countries like Vietnam and the Philippines. This disease pressure likely contributed to the observed swings in domestic output and market volume. The sharp contraction in exports over the period may also be linked to trade restrictions implemented for disease control.

In 2024, improved ASF control measures in Vietnam supported a forecast 3% rise in pork production. Meanwhile, the Philippines continued to experience supply challenges and price volatility due to ASF, leading to increased imports. Thailand faced lower swine prices driven by muted demand and labor shortages, while Asia-Pacific imports of related pig meat products fell by 11.4%, reflecting ongoing regional supply chain adjustments.
