The ASEAN market for horse, donkey and mule meat contracted significantly from 4 685 tons in 2018 to 3 402 tons in 2023, a reduction of over 25% in total volume. This decline was driven almost entirely by falling domestic production, which dropped from 4 610 tons to 3 403 tons over the same period.

After a sharp fall between 2018 and 2020, the market volume stabilized, remaining within a narrow range of 3 400 to 3 450 tons from 2020 onwards. This period of consolidation followed the initial contraction, with year-to-year movements becoming minimal.
