This growth was largely fueled by the broader adoption of toughened and laminated safety glass in construction, spurred by the implementation of the DIN 18008 building standard and similar Austrian ÖNORM and OIB guidelines. These regulations made safety glass compulsory for applications like full-height glazing, doors, and railings, directly increasing demand for products that mitigate fall and injury risks.

Following 2020, the market volume entered a period of decline, falling to USD 176.2 million in 2022 and dropping further to USD 158.3 million by 2024. During these years, the sector introduced innovations such as smart glass partition systems with integrated sensors and triple-laminated bulletproof glass, creating new niche segments. However, these developments did not reverse the overall decrease in market size, which coincided with reductions in both domestic production and import values.

Overall, between 2017 and 2020, production grew by 6%, representing an average annual growth rate of 2.0%.

Austria's safety glass exports declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 16,332 tonnes, a 26.3% decrease from the previous year. Exports reached their highest level in 2018 at 25,896 tonnes, with the largest annual increase of 9.5% recorded that year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports fell by 31%, corresponding to a compound annual growth rate of -11.6%.

Germany accounted for 28.1% of exports, Switzerland for 21.8%, and Italy for 9.0%. Together, these three countries represented 58.9% of Austria's total safety glass export flows.
