The market for coniferous roundwood in Vietnam grew from 1,431 thousand m³ in 2018 to 1,467 thousand m³ in 2020, supported by rising imports which increased from 137 thousand m³ to 167 thousand m³. The COVID-19 pandemic initially disrupted supply chains in 2020, but subsequent growth in domestic demand for wood due to remote work arrangements contributed to higher import volumes.

In 2021, the market volume peaked at 1,600 thousand m³ as raw wood imports surged by 79% to 300 thousand m³ following the recovery from pandemic-induced supply disruptions. However, in 2022, the market slightly retreated to 1,585 thousand m³ as high inflation in key export markets like the US and EU reduced demand for Vietnamese wood products and consequently for roundwood imports.

The market contracted to 1,465 thousand m³ in 2023, a 7.6% drop from the previous year. This decline was driven by a sharp 42% reduction in imports to 166 thousand m³, stemming from continued weak export demand, particularly from the US where inflation and a housing slowdown curbed orders for Vietnamese furniture and timber.

Over the period from 2018 to 2020, imports grew by 21.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 6.7%. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 135.9 K m³, which also saw the largest decline of 1.1%.
