The Portuguese coniferous roundwood market grew from 4.4 million m³ in 2018 to 4.7 million m³ in 2019. This expansion was supported by the introduction of a simplified market quotation system for forest products, which enhanced transparency and aimed to stabilize prices, along with strengthened producer organizations. The entry of the new brand Mercado da Madeira, specializing in PEFC-certified solid wood, responded to rising demand for natural materials and contributed to market growth.

After a sharp contraction to 3.5 million m³ in 2020, the market recovered to approximately 4.4 million m³ in 2021 and 2022. This recovery period was characterized by a persistent shortage of domestic roundwood, which increased reliance on imports to meet demand. Continuously low producer prices, despite high profitability in the pulp and paper industry, affected forestry sector returns. By 2023, the market volume had decreased to 3.9 million m³.
